Singles Awareness Day =SAD= Depression
It's around this time of year ( few days before
Valentine's Day) and two things happen.
1. People at work remind co-workers that it is a few days before
Valentine's day, so they had ought to buy something to show their
loved one how much they love their loved one.
Suggested gift ideas are things like flowers, greeting cards,
chocolates, cuddly toys, jewellery (i.e. stuff that men give to women).
I'm guessing that it's mainly stuff that men give women because if
you asked a bloke what he wanted for Valentine's day his reply would
probably be "a root" and no one really makes all that much money from that.
2. Single people get into cynical mode and start going on about how
it's really just an excuse for commercialism and that all how they
feel sickened whenever they see lovely dovey couples in love being
all snuggly wuggyly and holding hands etc. When someone says "You're
saying that because you're jealous" the cynical single person then
gets really depressed and doesn't stop being depressed until February 15.
If someone is just sad, then it might be a good time to change, not
just centering his feelings around one holiday.
Dr. Charisse Bryant offers some advice on how not to get depressed
over Valentine's Day: "See what you are expecting. Don't expect too
much just because it's a holiday. Keep your expectations in line with
reality."
Dr. Charisse Bryant said the feelings of depression come on when a
person starts feeling alone. The loneliness causes the depression.
Another way to over come yearly V-Day depressions is to look at the
bigger picture. For people who think they are the only person who is alone,
they are not.
Another suggestion to get over the depression is to try to find friends who
are also single on Valentine's Day and do something with them.
"It's amazing how doing something for someone else can make you feel better,"
Dr. Bryant said.
A lot of times people just need the connection with another person,
and not having that kind of connection on a holiday centered on being
with someone causes the depression. It's harder to reach out to someone
than to let them come to you !
