Why a bar only for women

Many women fail to get adequate vitamins and minerals on a daily basis. LUNA was created to help women get more of the nutrients often lacking in their meal plans. That's why LUNA contains ingredients like folic acid, soy protein, calcium, vitamins and minerals that are essential to a woman's everyday nutritional needs. As women ourselves, we understand the importance of maintaining a woman's overall health and wellness.

Can men eat LUNA bars too?

Yes, there is nothing in a LUNA bar that is not good for men. However, LUNA bars are specifically formulated to provide women with the nutrients that are often harder for them to get.

Can kids eat LUNA?

Because the bar is formulated with adult needs in mind, children should not eat a whole bar until their nutritional needs more closely match those of an adult (around ages 9-13). Children ages 4-9 could have half on occasion. As with all food choices, parents should use their best judgment.

How much calcium does LUNA provide?

LUNA provides women with 350 mg of calcium — as much as in an 8 oz glass of milk. Women need 1000-1200 mg per day and can reach that in 3-4 servings of dairy or calcium-fortified foods per day.

How much folic acid is in LUNA?

LUNA contains 400 mcg of folic acid. It is recommended that women of childbearing age get 400 mcg of folic acid each day from fortified foods or a supplement in addition to what they get from food.

Why does LUNA contain soy protein?

As part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, 25 grams of soy protein per day is recommended for heart health. LUNA contains 8-9 grams of soy protein, which is important for maintaining a balanced diet and good heart health.

Do LUNA bars contain genetically modified or bioengineered ingredients?

No, LUNA does not contain genetically modified or bioengineered ingredients. LUNA is committed to keeping bioengineered material out of our products. We use the best available practices, including careful sourcing of our soy suppliers and written certification that the soy they provide us has been tested and has not been bioengineered.

Are there any animal products in LUNA?

No, LUNA does not contain animal products or ingredients sourced from animal products.

What is the fractionated palm kernel oil (FPKO) in LUNA bars?

FPKO is an ingredient in the creamy, soy coating of LUNA that keeps the coating from melting at room temperature. Soy-coated LUNA bars contain a small amount (2-3 grams) of saturated fat from FPKO, which in moderation fits into a healthy diet and is not a source of trans fats.

Do LUNA bars contain trans fats?

No, LUNA does not contain trans fats. Because trans fats are not considered part of a healthy diet, we do not include any hydrogenated oils or animal fats (the sources of trans fats) in LUNA.

Is LUNA Kosher?

Yes, LUNA is certified Kosher Dairy. LUNA does not contain any dairy ingredients, however, it is produced on the same manufacturing equipment as other products that do contain dairy ingredients. Therefore, LUNA must be labeled as Kosher Dairy.

Does LUNA contain gluten?

Yes, LUNA does contain gluten, the protein that gives bread dough its elasticity. Gluten is found in the oats of the bar and in the small amount of barley malt added to the soy rice crisp.

How does LUNA help contribute to my daily fiber needs?

American Dietetic Association, the National Cancer Institute and the American Heart Association recommend 20-35 grams of fiber per day to help lower cholesterol and keep your digestive track healthy. LUNA contributes 2-3 gram of dietary fiber per bar. Most nutrition bars provide only 1-2 grams of fiber. Choosing foods with 3 or more grams of fiber per serving will help you reach the recommended levels for good health.

What is the difference between soluble and insoluble fiber?

Fiber is classified in two groups, soluble and insoluble. Both are equally important to the diet. Soluble fiber slows down digestion in the stomach, which slows down how fast sugars are absorbed into the blood stream. This helps to limit peaks and valleys in blood sugar. Soluble fiber has also been proven to reduce cholesterol. It is found in fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts, brown rice, oat bran and rice bran.

Insoluble fiber helps keep the digestive system moving. It also acts like a vacuum in the digestive tract, picking up food bits as it moves through. Insoluble fiber may decrease risk of digestive disorders such as constipation and may help to reduce the risk of colon cancer. It is found in whole wheat, wheat bran, corn bran, many vegetables and skins of fruits and root vegetables.

Is LUNA a meal replacement bar?

No, LUNA is not a meal replacement bar. We realize women are busy, and some days, mealtime just gets away from you. On those days when LUNA is your best alternative to skipping a meal, try to follow it up with something light such as yogurt and a piece of fruit.

How does LUNA fit into a diabetic meal plan?

LUNA has a good balance of carbohydrate, fat and protein with approximate diabetic exchanges of 1.5 – 2 carbohydrates, 1 Lean Protein, 1 fat. This makes LUNA a great between-meal snack that is convenient to carry in your backpack, car or to keep in your desk drawer.

LUNA is equal in carbs, fat and protein to approximately 2.5 graham cracker squares with a tablespoon of peanut butter. (1.5-2 carbohydrate servings, 25-27 gm carbs, 10 gm protein, 6- 7 fat gm per serving.)

If I am allergic to peanuts, can I eat a LUNA bar?

If you’re allergic to any nut or seed you should not eat LUNA. The bars are made on the same machinery as flavors containing nuts and seeds, and even with very strict washing procedures, we’re unable to remove all nut/seed residue. All LUNA bars may contain nuts, seeds or nut/seed residue.

What if I am allergic to nuts and have eaten LUNA before with no reaction?

This may have just been chance. The amount of nuts, seeds or nut/seed residue varies from bar to bar and may never be the same. You take a risk with each individual bar. It is recommended those with nut or seed allergies do not eat LUNA.
